Assistive Technology: The Daytech Wi-Fi Smart Wireless Caregiver Pager System

The Daytech Smart Caregiver Pager System helps the elderly, people with seizure disorders and people with chronic illnesses. It mostly follows the social and functional models by reducing social barriers within the household and by relying on innovative technology to eliminate limitations. It consists of a wearable call button that users press when they need assistance and a receiver that alerts caregivers of their needs.

  1. The Alert and Share Functionality Feature

Once the button is pressed, the receiver flashes and emits an alarm that alerts others that assistance is needed. The device, however, also has a shared functionality feature that alerts users through applications like Smart Life and Tuya. This happens by connecting the pager system to the mobile applications. Once the connection is completed, it’ll send notifications to people’s phones when an alarm goes off. Multiple people from anywhere in the world can connect through this feature.

Benefits

This sharing function allows multiple people to connect to the device, giving users a larger support system. For instance, it corresponds to the social model, by giving users access to household activities, like climbing stairs, cooking or even getting out of bed. The fear of having no one to get them assistance is lessened by the fact that, not one, but multiple people would get the alert at once. It eliminates social barriers by allowing individuals to live alone, or even live alone in another country, as the alarm can alert people who don’t live in the same household. Therefore, by connecting this device to people’s mobile devices, this technological innovation fits into the functional model and enables friends and family to receive notifications about the person’s needs anytime or anywhere. It overcomes limitations by notifying multiple caregivers in various locations who can drive over or even call medical services.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately, this feature depends on the person with a disability having a reliable community. From a social model point of view, there can still be a barrier; if the person is limited in the number of people they can connect to the device, then this also means there’s less help available to them. It’s great that the device can alert many people in different locations, but this function isn’t helpful if there’s no community to add to their pager system.

2. Wireless Wi-Fi Connectivity and Expandable System Feature

The pager system operates on a 2.4G wireless Wi-Fi connection, where the receiver must be within 66ft of the Wi-Fi signal for efficient connectivity. It relies strongly on Wi-Fi, as the button and receiver must be on the same local network to function. A wireless Wi-Fi connection allows the receiver to notify everyone quickly and helps to avoid the need for extensive wires or installation processes. The Expandable System enables users to add multiple buttons and receivers on the same network, furthering its reliance on Wi-Fi by extending connectivity throughout the same household.

Benefits

This function corresponds to the social model by giving users independence to do various household activities. It gives them peace of mind that if they were to get hurt after falling, help would be on its way promptly due to the quickness of the Wi-Fi’s connectivity feature. The expandable system also creates access by allowing multiple receivers and buttons to be added and placed easily around the household. Since they’re wireless devices, this technological innovation makes it easier to place the receivers and the buttons in different rooms within the 66ft radius.

Disadvantages

Wireless Wi-Fi connectivity also creates social barriers since, once users leave their home or enter a location without Wi-Fi access, they can no longer rely on the device for assistance. This can even create limitations for users in their own backyard, where the Wi-Fi signal might not always reach their devices. This doesn’t help people with disabilities when it comes to the social model, as it makes environments outside the household inaccessible. When it comes to the functional model, the expandable system offers solutions by providing multiple access points around the house, but without Wi-Fi and money to buy additional devices, it’s not always a usable feature. This even delves a bit into the economic model, as many cannot afford to buy multiples of these devices. Many struggle to keep their electricity on and pay for Wi-Fi, too. What can a person who needs this device do if they were to lose their electricity and Wi-Fi? It’s an original product that provides solutions through its wireless connection and expandability; however, it’s also limited because of its reliance on it.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Daytech Pager System eliminates social barriers within one’s household, but creates barriers outside the household. It also plays into the functional model by using creative features like worldwide alerts and the expandable system. Unfortunately, these technological advancements also affect the economic model, which limits users who cannot buy multiple devices to satisfy different locations. Solutions could include calling emergency services immediately if the button is pressed a certain way or by updating the device to be less reliant on Wi-Fi. The device is a good solution for households, but it needs updates to further break down more external barriers.
