Alongside it, the note feature affords sharing thoughts or songs, with its corresponding bubble icon serving as another signifier. By cramming these features into a direct communication tool, Meta mimics other platforms within its ecosystem like Instagram and Facebook, making Messenger a prime victim of featuritis.

Furthermore, the inclusion of Facebook Reels, Events, and Dating within the menu directly conflicts with the user’s mental model, leaving users confused about the app’s exact purpose and causing them to misunderstand how to actually use Messenger.

This feature clutter severely widens the Gulf of Execution. When users open the app with the simple goal of initiating a quick, private conversation, they are immediately overwhelmed by irrelevant noise, forcing them to navigate through unnecessary distractions just to execute a basic task.
Solution:
As users text and make calls on a daily basis, Incremental Innovation provides the most effective approach for refinement. To resolve the menu clutter, unnecessary services like Facebook Dating, Reels, and Events should be relocated to a dedicated “Meta Ecosystem” submenu within Settings, accompanied by a digital toggle switch. This acts as a logical constraint, allowing users to explicitly enable or disable these shortcuts based on their personal mental model. For the “Create Story” and “Share a note” section, rather than leaving it permanently on the primary feed, Meta could introduce a long-press gesture to collapse or hide them entirely, offering a visual indication of constraint to simplify the avatar area.

Regarding the calling functionality, the top-right corner of the chat interface affords making audio and video calls, wherein the telephone receiver and camera icons act as explicit signifiers. However, their close physical proximity frequently induces action-based slips: users intending to place a simple audio call often accidentally trigger a video call instead, causing immediate cognitive disruption.

Once a call is initiated, the recipient receives multi-sensory feedback through ringtone audio and vibration and strong cultural constraints via a green “Answer” button and a red “Decline” button. First, to mitigate slips caused by the voice/video call buttons, Messenger should introduce a confirmation pop-up acting as an interlock mechanism.
